Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Srettha Thavisin has set a goal to develop Thailand as a regional aviation hub and one of the top ten air cargo distribution centers in the world.
In his announcement of the vision “Ignite Thailand, Aviation Hub” at Government House on 1 March 2024, the Prime Minister said that previously, in 2005, Suvarnabhumi Airport was ranked 13th in the world. However, currently, it has fallen to 68th place globally. Therefore, the Government plans to develop Thailand's airports and return Suvarnabhumi to its place as one of the 20 best airports in the world within five years.
In the development plan, the Government aims to increase the capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport, so that it will be able to accommodate 150 million passengers annually by 2030. Airports of Thailand Public Company (AOT) has carried out various projects to achieve this aim, such as opening a second passenger terminal, SAT-1 and a third runway. It will also expand passenger terminals on the east-west side, construct a passenger terminal on the south side, and build a fourth runway.
As for Don Mueang Airport, it will be transformed into a point-to-point model, expanding capacity from 30 million to 50 million passengers annually by 2030, and a new international terminal will be built. The Government also plans to construct a large-scale commercial Junction Building to be another tourist attraction, increase parking space, connect the airport to a mass transit system, and develop an Aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) center.
Phuket International Airport will be further developed by expanding the international passenger terminal and building a new concourse. A second Phuket Airport, known as Andaman Airport, will be constructed to accommodate more tourists traveling to Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi and other nearby provinces. Andaman Airport will accommodate about 40 million people per year and serve both long-haul flights and point-to-point international flights.
The Government plans to construct an international passenger terminal at Chiang Mai International Airport, while improving the existing passenger terminal, so that the airport will be able to serve 16.5 million people per year from the current eight million by 2029. Moreover, a second Chiang Mai Airport, known as Lanna Airport, will be constructed to accommodate an additional 20 million passengers annually.
In addition, the Government will upgrade airports nationwide and adopt modern passenger service technologies and innovations to provide efficient and quick services. It will also promote the use of high-quality Thai agricultural products to supply food to various airlines, in an effort to develop Thailand into the kitchen of the world.
