Digital Economy Is Driving Thailand’s Economic Growth

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Jantararuangtong stated that the digital economy is playing a significant role in driving Thailand’s economic growth and that the Government is working hard to move the digital economy forward.

Despite the impact of US reciprocal tariffs, Thailand’s broad digital economy is likely to reach 4.69 trillion baht this year, expanding by 6.2 percent year-on-year. This represents growth 3.4 times higher than the anticipated national GDP gain in 2025.

The National Economic and Social Development Council estimated that Thailand's GDP growth would reach 1.8 percent in 2025. Thailand recorded GDP growth of 2.5 percent in 2024. During the past five months, Thai digital exports were valued at 860 billion baht, an increase of 35 percent year-on-year.

According to the World Bank’s new Thailand Economic Monitor: Digital Pathways to Growth launched on 3 July 2025, digital transformation can boost Thailand’s competitiveness, create jobs, and drive longer term economic growth amid global uncertainty,

Thailand’s annual GDP growth is expected to slow to 1.8 percent in 2025 and 1.7 percent in 2026, reflecting recent global trade policy shifts, weakening exports, slowing consumption, and moderating tourism recovery. However, GDP growth could rise to 2.2 percent in 2025 and 1.8 percent in 2026 with improved investment sentiment.

The report finds that digital technology can be a catalyst for growth and create more jobs, deliver better services, and boost productivity in the face of uncertain conditions affecting all sectors.

Thailand’s digital economy is estimated to contribute around 6 percent of GDP and is the second largest in the ASEAN region. Financial services, digital payments, fintech, and software and engineering industries, have seen some of the fastest rates of job creation over the past decade.

Digital transformation is expected to be one of the major areas of discussion at the World Bank Group - IMF Annual Meetings, to be hosted by Thailand in 2026.
