Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Srettha Thavisin has encouraged travelers to embrace their experiences, share their travel stories in Thailand that will turn into lifelong memories, and inspire others around the world to seek endless journeys in Thailand.
Speaking at the “Amazing Thailand Networking Event with the Prime Minister of Thailand” at the Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin (ITB Berlin) 2024 in Germany on 7 March, the Prime Minister pointed out that tourism does not only contribute to the economy, but also brings employment opportunities for a huge portion of the Thai population. This is why his administration plans to use all the tools to propel Thailand’s tourism industry to the next level.
First, he said, Thailand is drastically improving the ease of travelling. Within the past five months, it has already provided temporary visa exemptions for Indian, Russian, Kazakhstani, and Taiwanese citizens. Thailand has signed a bilateral visa exemption agreement between Thailand and China, which came into effect on 1 March 2024. It has also discussed the "One Visa, Free Your Destination" agreement with its ASEAN counterparts to promote joint regional tourism, and further ease cross-border travel in the region. In addition, Thailand is in discussion with the European Union (EU) on a similar agreement regarding the Schengen visa zone.
Second, the Thai government is working to add and promote local cultures and values and create unique experiences for tourists in lesser-known cities across the country.
Third, the Prime Minister said, “We are working to modernize the regulations to make them more suitable for international tourists. For example, we are working to adjust the operating hours of entertainment venues in key areas. We have also relaxed some regulations, such as the sales of alcoholic beverages, and lowering taxes on alcoholic beverages.”
Fourth, Thailand is leveraging its cultural heritage or “soft power” as a selling point to promote unique and meaningful travels. For example, Thailand’s unique and beautiful festivals have been used to make the country a world-class festival destination.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister stated that the Government is designing additional incentives and approaching organizers of major international festivals, concerts, and events to make sure there is always something exciting happening in Thailand.
