Thailand and Cambodia have reaffirmed their strategic partnership and agreed to promote closer military cooperation at all levels to maintain peace and stability along their common border.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra discussed many issues with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet during her official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia on 23-24 April 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In her press statement, Prime Minister Paetongtarn thanked Prime Minister Hun Manet for the strong partnership between the police forces of both countries in fighting online scams. She stressed that Thailand and Cambodia would continue to cooperate to eradicate these criminal networks from the Thai-Cambodian border areas and speed up border development.
Thailand is ready to host a joint Cabinet retreat between the two countries at the border area, in conjunction with the official opening of the first Thailand-Cambodia Friendship bridge. Both countries will also speed up demining efforts along the border and promote cooperation between border special economic zones on both sides.
The Prime Minister said, “We will also work to conclude the Bilateral Road Transport Agreement to allow private vehicles to cross the border, and develop a cross-border rail freight service to reduce logistics costs and increase efficiency, thereby strengthening connectivity between our two countries and beyond.”
Thailand and Cambodia will deepen economic cooperation and aim to increase bilateral trade from 10 billion to 15 billion US dollars by 2027. Prime Minister Paetongtarn thanked the Cambodian Prime Minister for his continued support for Thai investors, currently the ninth-largest source of foreign direct investments in Cambodia.
Concerning tourism cooperation, Thailand and Cambodia will advance the “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative, as well as updating the Border Crossing Agreement to facilitate border crossings for tourism purpose. Moreover, both sides will make sure that Cambodian workers are recruited through legal channels in order to have access to appropriate welfare and benefits. They will continue to strengthen people-to-people friendship and understanding, especially between young people of both countries.
Thailand and Cambodia also welcomed the opening of the Thai Consulate General in Siem Reap and the upcoming Cambodian Consulate General in Songkhla. On this occasion, Prime Minister Paetongtarn and Prime Minister Hun Manet witnessed the signing of the following seven documents:
1. Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia on the Management, Maintenance, and Usage of Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian – Stung Bot);
2. Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Kingdom of Thailand And the Ministry of Environment of the Kingdom of Cambodia On Transboundary Environmental Pollution Cooperation;
3. Exchange of Notes between Thailand International Cooperation Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, and Directorate General of Technical Vocational Education and Training of Cambodia on Revision of Agreement for the Establishment of the Cambodian - Thai Skill Development Center;
4. Agreement on the Employment Workers between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia;
5. Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Labor Cooperation;
6. Record of Discussion between the Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (Public Organization) of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Kingdom of Cambodia for the Technical Assistance on the Detailed Design for the Improvement of the National Road No.57 (Section of Battambang-Prom International Border Checkpoint) Project;
7. Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia on the Construction of the New Border Bridge at Nation Border Check Point Ban Pak Kard, Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province.
