Lertchai Lertvut, Deputy Secretary-General of Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has reassured consumers that seafood imported from Japan is still safe for consumption after thorough radiation testing. The declaration comes in the midst of global worries regarding the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power facility, destroyed by a tsunami in 2011. Since the Fukushima facility started discharging treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean on 24 August this year, strict safety precautions have been put in place. To date, the Thai FDA has tested 75 samples of "at-risk" seafood, including squid, mollusks, and crabs, to determine how much cesium-134 and cesium-137 they contain. The results from 42 of the 73 samples studied thus far have revealed no radioactive residues that are above international criteria, while analysis of the remaining 33 samples is still ongoing, according to the deputy secretary-general.
